Like many great people, there are always interesting things about them that make them human like the rest of us mortals. Even Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, who celebrated his 19th coronation anniversary yesterday in Busiro County, and recently, made 57 years. We talked to a couple of people who have watched the Kabaka blossom, and they shared a few interesting things about the monarch.
1. Belongs to the Nkima (monkey clan): Kabaka Ronald Mutebi belongs to the Nkima (monkey) clan. In Buganda, kings take on the clan of their mothers. His children, however, are princes and princesses, and they take on the Balangira clan.
2. Loves movies: The Kabaka is said to also be a keen and ardent lover of movies, whether it is simply watching from the high comforts of the palace or a cinema.
3. Body guards (Bambowa): The king of Buganda moves with a security detail composed of Baganda UPDF soldiers. There are, however, other guards who move even closer to him and dress in the traditional garb of bark cloth and kanzus as compared to the rest, who wear the militaristic green fatigues. The guards move around in four-wheel drive cars with the plates, “Royal Guards” plastered on the back and front.
4. Loves Oliver Mtukudzi: Music has a way of tearing into the soul of even the hardest hearts; mention any historical strong man, whether it is Napoleon or Hitler, and they all had at least a specific type of music they liked. And Kabaka Ronald Mutebi is a keen lover of music. He has a large collection of many musicians. He especially likes African music and one of his favourite musicians is Zimbabwean World Music star, Oliver Mtukudzi.

Mushikiwabo to UN: Enhance civilian protection

By Eugene Kwibuka Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to invest more energy in the prevention of conflicts for better protection of civilians living in conflict-torn areas. Rwanda’s Foreign minister, Louise Mushikiwabo Louise Mushikiwabo made the call during an open debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflict which the UNSC held in New York on Tuesday. “Rwanda’s core message today is that enhancing the protection of civilians in armed conflict requires action before a conflict starts. The proliferation of non-state armed groups makes civilian protection both more urgent, and harder to achieve,” she said. For better protection of civilians in armed-conflict areas, the minister emphasised the need to increase investments in professionalising the military and police forces through adequate training. “Only when the leadership of armed forces shares the international...
