By SEAN O'HARE
President Obama celebrated stopping his country going over the fiscal cliff with his favourite Hawaiian tipple yesterday, as he rejoined his family on their Christmas holidays.
He returned to Hawaii on Wednesday after reaching a deal in Congress that will stop most tax increases for the middle class.
Yesterday he stepped out with his family and friends for a spot of bowling and an iced drink, known in Hawaii as a shave ice, at his regular spot, Island Snow in Kailua.

Dressed casually in a blue polo shirt, jeans and sandals, the President stepped out of his motorcade at 4pm yesterday and surprised locals queuing in the Island Snow when he popped to place an order.
Nigel Watson, visiting from Melbourne, Australia, told Hawaii News Now: 'We came for a shave ice because it was a bit wet on the beach, and shook the hand of the President of the United States of America. You don't get to do that everyday.
'We were actually in the store and what turned out to be Secret Service knocked on the door and let us out, and then they started roping (us) off, and -- yeah, it was a bit of a buzz.' Read more: dailymail.co.uk/news

Mushikiwabo to UN: Enhance civilian protection

By Eugene Kwibuka Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to invest more energy in the prevention of conflicts for better protection of civilians living in conflict-torn areas. Rwanda’s Foreign minister, Louise Mushikiwabo Louise Mushikiwabo made the call during an open debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflict which the UNSC held in New York on Tuesday. “Rwanda’s core message today is that enhancing the protection of civilians in armed conflict requires action before a conflict starts. The proliferation of non-state armed groups makes civilian protection both more urgent, and harder to achieve,” she said. For better protection of civilians in armed-conflict areas, the minister emphasised the need to increase investments in professionalising the military and police forces through adequate training. “Only when the leadership of armed forces shares the international...
