Egyptian security forces killed 10 militants and captured 20 others in
an operation in the Sinai Peninsula over the past 48 hours, state news
agency MENA reported on Sunday.
“Security operations carried out by the armed forces and police in north
Sinai to hunt down armed terrorists... (resulted) in the liquidation of
10 of these armed terrorist elements,” the agency said, citing a
security source.
The North Sinai region is always restive, used as a base by hardline
Islamists who increased their attacks after the security vacuum created
by the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
But attacks on security forces, and subsequent reprisals, have become
almost daily since Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi’s ouster on July 3.
