High Definition (HD) TV in Africa takes another giant step forward this month (from Wednesday March 24) as DStv launches three brand new channels on its DStv Premium service. Alongside the recently launched entertainment channel M-Net HD, audiences can now tune in for SuperSport HD, Discovery HD Showcase and iConcerts HD.
Available to DStv Premium subscribers who have an HD ready television and who access their DStv services through the technologically advanced HD PVR (Personal Video Recorder), the four channels symbolize DStv’s fast start when it comes to providing multiple HD channels to its subscribers.
Commenting on the new HD channel launches, MultiChoice Africa President Collins Khumalo is confident in the role DStv will play in offering diversified viewing options for its African consumers.

“As an African business which has long looked to the future for innovation, we’re confident that by offering these HD channels to our consumers we are bringing that future right into their homes. In a world constantly evolving, it’s our aim to remain at the forefront of technological advancements so that our customers remain at the forefront of global changes.”
He goes on to say, “High Definition television, with its crystal clear clarity offering a remarkable visual experience, is a new and much in demand product. We are therefore extremely happy to have been able to secure and offer these channels to our DStv subscribers.”
And there’s good news ahead for DStv Premium subscribers…with the impending launch of SuperSport High Definition (DStv channel 171) this week, these viewers across the continent will be able to watch the 2010 World Cup in High Definition.
Offering sharper television pictures than ever before, HD is the ultimate way to watch sport; an unparalleled experience for the TV sports viewer. Apart from the World Cup, regular sporting events in HD include Barclays Premiership football, Champions League, Indian Premier League cricket, US Masters golf and MotoGP.
Meanwhile Discovery HD Showcase (DStv channel 172) is the only global high definition television brand offering the very best factual entertainment, selected from various Discovery channels as well as exclusive content that can only be seen on Discovery HD Showcase. Offering breathtaking sound and magnetic imagery, the channel covers a variety of programmes including science, technology, people, places and natural history.
And rounding off the HD channels now available on DStv is iConcerts HD (DStv channel 173). Like the recently launched iConcerts channel, iConcerts HD is a must-watch 24 hour music channel from Europe, ideal for those audiences who love to spend time in concert halls and music clubs. The channel includes music from a range of musical genres including blues, hip hop, jazz, pop, soul, reggae, rock and more.
So if you’re true TV fan who loves to be close to the action, then you really must tune in to DStv’s new HD channels and experience television in a whole new way.

Mushikiwabo to UN: Enhance civilian protection

By Eugene Kwibuka Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to invest more energy in the prevention of conflicts for better protection of civilians living in conflict-torn areas. Rwanda’s Foreign minister, Louise Mushikiwabo Louise Mushikiwabo made the call during an open debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflict which the UNSC held in New York on Tuesday. “Rwanda’s core message today is that enhancing the protection of civilians in armed conflict requires action before a conflict starts. The proliferation of non-state armed groups makes civilian protection both more urgent, and harder to achieve,” she said. For better protection of civilians in armed-conflict areas, the minister emphasised the need to increase investments in professionalising the military and police forces through adequate training. “Only when the leadership of armed forces shares the international...

Saudi King urges U.N. action against religious insults

Saudi King Abdullah urged the United Nations to produce a resolution condemning insults on monotheistic religions after the anti-Islam film in the U.S. that sparked deadly protests in many Muslim countries last month. (AFP) By AFP, MINA/SAUDI ARABIA Saudi King Abdullah on Saturday demanded a U.N. resolution condemning insults on monotheistic religions after a low-budget film produced in the U.S. sparked deadly protests last month. “I demand a U.N. resolution that condemns any country or group that insults religions and prophets,” he said during a meeting at his palace with religious figures and heads of hajj delegations in the Mina valley where pilgrims were performing final rituals of hajj. “It is our duty and that of every Muslim to protect Islam and defend the prophets.” A low-budget film produced in the U.S., Innocence of Muslims, triggered a wave of deadly anti-American violence last month across the Muslim world targeting US symbols ranging ...
