INTERNATIONAL CLINICAL, OPERATIONAL AND HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH TRAINING IN AIDS AND TUBERCULOSIS (ICOHRTA) is one of MUHAS HARVARD RESEARCH PROJECTS that intends to train a critical mass of researchers in Tanzania in the area of HIV/TB diseases implementation research. ICOHRTA will train future leaders in epidemiological, operations and health services, and clinical research related to these two major infectious diseases.
Tanzania is one of the most affected countries in sub-Saharan Africa by HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB). As a result of HIV/AIDS, life expectancy declined from 56 years to 40 years. Even though Tanzania is regarded as having a successful TB program, TB is still one of the leading causes of hospital admissions and death. There is an urgent need to scale up the implementation of known interventions for prevention, care and treatment of these infections. Improving the national capacity for implementation research sciences is imperative to maximize the output from the infusion of large sums of funding into control of HIV and TB through the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria; the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, and other bilateral and multilateral initiatives.
The ICOHRTA programme is offering opportunities and financial support to qualified Tanzanians to pursue Masters of Public Health (MPH) or Doctorate Studies (PhD) at Muhimbili University of Health and allied Sciences (MUHAS) as well as at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.
