The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in collaboration with the South Africa High Commission cordially invites the media to the first commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day to be held on Friday,16 July 2010 at 1000am at Karimjee Hall.
The commemoration is an opportunity to recognize Nelson Mandela’s dedication to the service of humanity across many fields - conflict resolution, race relations, promotion and protection of human rights, reconciliation, gender equality - and his contribution to the struggle for democracy both in South Africa and internationally.
The Guest of Honor will be the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The ceremony will be colored by statements from the Government, the UN and SA High Commission, Paper presentation on Mandela legacy by Prof Chris Maina Peter (UDSM) and perfomances. The observance of Nelson Mandela Day was established by General Assembly resolution 64/13 in November 2009.
The Resolution acknowledges Nelson Mandela’s contribution to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world, and called upon member states, United Nations system, international organizations as well as civil society organizations to observe the day every 18 July starting from the year 2010.
Since July 18 falls on a Sunday this year the Day will be marked on Friday 16 July.
