Tanzania’s first Literary and Jazz festival opens in Stone Town, Zanzibar on Friday 2nd September.

Zanzibar’s President will be opening the country’s first literary and jazz festival on Friday 2nd September at 8.00pm, Writers and Musicians have been arriving in Stone Town over the last few days and the stage is now set for an exciting weekend of conversation, debate and music.

The jazz festival will open with a concert by musicians Moussa Diallo, Jaiza Bongo, Safar and Mim Suleiman at 9.00pm in the Old Fort. The Literary Festival will open with a debate on Reconciliation in Politics with the Ex President H.E. Dr. Amani Abeid Karume, Former British Cabinet Minister and EX UN Deputy Secretary General Lord Malloch - Brown and Writer and Activist Gillian Slovo on the panel.

The debate will discuss the success and problems on reconciling conflicting political views while promoting the cause of democracy in an African context. The festival will continue with further sessions, concerts, workshops, gourmet lunches and dinners.

The festival closes on Sunday evening 4th September with a concert by Al Campos and Soul Harmonic and other festival musicians.

As part of linking with the community the Festival held an essay writing competition on the subject of writing for peace, Over 3,000 essays and poems were submitted, The winner will be announced at the festival opening and the recipient will be given a scholarship to a Zanzibari University.

The organisers hope that community links can be further expanded in future years. Festival founder Abeid Karume says; “Our aim is to promote learning through music and literature, we hope the Jahazi Festival will generate interest in education, writing and music.”

Mushikiwabo to UN: Enhance civilian protection

By Eugene Kwibuka Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to invest more energy in the prevention of conflicts for better protection of civilians living in conflict-torn areas.
